Abstract
- Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), including Myocardial infarction (MI), Stroke, and heart failure (HF), remain major global health challenges. Lifestyle factors such as poor diet, sedentary behavior, and stress contribute to the development and progression of CVD. Many nutraceuticals are rich in antioxidants, which combat oxidative stress and inflammation implicated in cardiovascular diseases. Polyphenols, found in fruits, vegetables, tea, and red wine, have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and vasodilatory effects. Omega-3 fatty acids, which are abundant in fatty fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts, are recognized for their positive effects on heart health. They can reduce triglyceride levels, and lower blood pressure, in addition to their anti-inflammatory effects. These naturally-derived compounds, found in certain nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils, have been shown to lower LDL cholesterol levels, reducing the risk of atherosclerosis. Garlic contains allicin, known for its potential to lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Turmeric's active compound, curcumin, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that may benefitcardiovascular health. CoQ10 is an antioxidant naturally present in the body, and it plays a crucial role in energy production in cells. Dietary fiber, found in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, can help regulate cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and body weight, contributing to overall cardiovascular health. Vitamin K2, found in fermented foods and certain animal products, may play a role in preventing arterial calcification and promoting heart health. Research in this field is ongoing, and while promising, it is essential to consider nutraceuticals as part of a holistic approach to cardiovascular health. As the understanding of nutraceuticals and their impact on cardiovascular health continues to evolve, further clinical trials and long-term studies will provide more insights, helping to establish their role in the prevention and management of cardiovascular diseases.
