Abstract

The United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) has published a report on military child care services and their efforts to retain employees. The report highlights challenges in recruitment and retention, including a lengthy onboarding process, stressful work environments, and limited career progression opportunities. To address these challenges, the Department of Defense (DOD) and the military services offer benefits such as paid leave and recruitment bonuses. The report also emphasizes the need for the military services to implement leading workforce practices and establish metrics to track the effectiveness of retention initiatives. The GAO has made seven recommendations to improve the recruitment and retention of child care workers, which have been concurred with by the DOD and the military services.
