Abstract

Glaciers are increasingly being seen as fragile bodies that require human attention and care due to their importance in supporting human thriving. Glacially fed rivers provide drinking water and support fisheries and hydropower plants, particularly in Asia. With global temperatures rising, there is a growing interest in cryoengineering, or the design of interventions to mitigate the loss of ice mass and rising sea levels. However, there is debate among glaciologists about the feasibility and potential consequences of these interventions. In addition to cryoengineering, there is also a movement to design memorials for glaciers lost to climate change, emphasizing human-nonhuman reconciliation and intergenerational ethics.
