Abstract

A patent has been issued for an aluminum oxide layer on an anode foil for an aluminum electrolytic capacitor. The patent, assigned to Pacesetter Inc., describes a method of producing the oxide layer and a device that includes the layer. The invention aims to increase the energy density of capacitors used in implantable medical devices, such as implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs), by minimizing the volume taken up by separators and cathodes and maximizing the number of anodes. The method involves immersing the anodic foil in a solution, inducing defects in the oxide layer, and reforming the layer into an aluminum oxide with a boehmite phase and a pseudo-boehmite phase.
