Abstract
- The article examines historical instances of identity politics and their often violent consequences, focusing on the sixth-century Byzantine Empire and modern Sri Lanka. It highlights how seemingly trivial distinctions, like the chariot racing factions of the Blues and Greens, can escalate into deadly conflicts when identity politics and official favoritism are involved.
