Abstract

This article presents new data on the relationship between faecal calprotectin and zonulin, biomarkers of intestinal inflammation and permeability, and the infant microbiome during early life. The study found that zonulin and calprotectin levels were elevated in healthy infants without detectable disease. Factors such as vaginal delivery and lack of antibiotic exposure were associated with higher levels of these biomarkers. The study also identified specific bacterial taxa and metabolic pathways that were associated with zonulin and calprotectin levels. The findings suggest that these biomarkers may play a role in healthy gut and immune development during early life. Further research is needed to explore this relationship in more detail.
