Abstract

This article discusses the use of MRI to assess knee cartilage and its role in the management of osteoarthritis (OA). Traditional MRI approaches have limitations in detecting subtle changes in cartilage degeneration, so quantitative cartilage MRI techniques have been developed to assess compositional changes in the cartilage. The article also explores the effects of loading on cartilage deformation and the potential for using MR imaging to study the short-term effects of loading. The authors present a new approach that uses prospective motion correction to capture cartilage deformation during the entire loading and recovery cycle. While this technique shows promise, further studies are needed to establish its clinical utility in the management of OA. [Extracted from the article]
