Abstract

A new report from University Hospital Centre Zagreb in Croatia discusses the findings of a study on paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). The study focused on the use of superior vena cava (SVC) isolation in addition to conventional cryoballoon pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) as a treatment method for PAF. The study found that while SVC isolation can be successfully achieved in most PAF patients using conventional cryoballoon, it significantly increases the risk of transient or impending phrenic nerve palsy (PNP) and sinus node injury compared to conventional cryoballoon PVI. The researchers recommend careful monitoring of phrenic nerve function and attention to bradycardia or junctional rhythm to mitigate these risks. Further follow-up data is being collected to determine if the benefits of SVC isolation outweigh the risks. [Extracted from the article]
