Abstract

A new trend of planting tiny forests is coming to Manhattan, with the first one set to be planted on Roosevelt Island. The Manhattan Healing Forest will consist of 1,000 native plants, trees, and shrubs covering 2,700 square feet. The forest will be planted using the Miyawaki method, which encourages rapid growth and self-sufficiency within a few decades. Similar mini-forests have been planted around the world, providing benefits such as cooling effects, floodwater absorption, and habitat for wildlife. In the United States, Miyawaki-style forests have been planted in Los Angeles, Washington State, and Cambridge. The Roosevelt Island mini-forest will be the 200th such forest planted by the SUGi foundation. [Extracted from the article]
