Abstract

Recent findings from Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington have provided new information about U.S. Military Medical Research. The study focused on the use of mobile thermal imaging and machine learning technology for the detection of early surgical site infections (SSI). The researchers developed two neural network models to detect SSIs based on thermal images and achieved 89-92% accuracy in predicting pixel class. Although the low infection rate prevented the models from identifying SSIs, they were successful in segmenting wounds. This proof-of-concept study demonstrates the potential of computer vision in supporting future surgical applications. [Extracted from the article]
