Abstract

Health libraries play a crucial role in supporting post-graduate medical training in Australia. Accreditation documents from various medical colleges and associations outline the standards for educational resources and facilities, including health libraries, for medical trainees. However, there is inconsistency in how these standards are defined and implemented. A content analysis of accreditation documents revealed variations in requirements for library support, access to collections, library space, and library services. To address these inconsistencies and ensure equitable access to information resources and support, the authors recommend the development of a benchmark accreditation standard for health libraries. This standard should include access to a curated collection of high-quality information, staffed by qualified librarians, and provide physical library space with relevant resources and computing facilities. The authors urge colleges and associations to adopt this standard to improve consistency and support the production of a highly skilled medical workforce. [Extracted from the article]
