Abstract

The University of Virginia sociologist James Davison Hunter discusses his new book, "Democracy and Solidarity: The Cultural Roots of America’s Political Crisis," in an interview with Religion Watch. He explains that American society was historically held together by a "hybrid-Enlightenment" culture that blended various sources, including classical republicanism and Protestant Christianity. However, the culture wars have intensified, leading to an erosion of the common cultural resources that once kept opposing sides on the same page. This has resulted in a more secular culture war characterized by cultural nihilism and an absence of reasoned arguments. Hunter also notes the marginalization of Christianity in American public life and the potential for violence in these conflicts. He encourages Christians to embrace a model of "faithful presence" rather than partisan political activism. While efforts of reconciliation and dialogue have limited influence on the national level, there is still potential for de-escalation and hope for resolving these conflicts.
