Abstract

A recent study conducted by the Bundeswehr Institute of Radiobiology in Munich, Germany, explored the use of gene expression in saliva as an alternative to blood for biodosimetry and predicting radiation-induced health effects. The study found that saliva contains similar gene expression patterns to blood, indicating that saliva could be a non-invasive and reliable method for assessing radiation exposure and predicting health outcomes. However, the study also noted that not all genes showed the same patterns in saliva as in blood, suggesting that further research is needed for each specific gene of interest. This research provides valuable insights into the potential use of saliva as a biomarker for radiation exposure and its associated health effects. [Extracted from the article]
