Abstract

A study conducted by researchers at the University of Northern Iowa explores the use of a high-emotion preterm simulator to enhance the training of speech-language pathology graduate students in infant feeding management. The study compared the outcomes of participants who received either a 1-hour lecture or 1-hour training with the simulator. The results showed that both groups improved in written examination scores and identification of stress cues, but the simulator group demonstrated better ability to identify stress cues during a hands-on simulated bottle-feeding scenario. The researchers suggest that hands-on training using high-fidelity simulation can effectively develop clinical feeding skills for future speech-language pathologists in neonatal intensive care unit and early intervention settings.
