Abstract

New York grocery chain Gristedes Supermarkets has agreed to pay a $400,000 civil penalty and invest approximately $13.5 million to upgrade its refrigeration equipment after failing to limit greenhouse gas emissions from its refrigerators. The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York filed a lawsuit against Gristedes, alleging violations of the Clean Air Act and the Environmental Protection Agency's Recycling and Emissions Reduction Rule. Gristedes emitted over 40,000 pounds of refrigerants into the atmosphere between 2019 and 2021, resulting in a global warming effect equivalent to driving a car 140 million miles. The consent decree requires Gristedes to reduce its emissions by over 70% from 2020 levels and implement a comprehensive refrigerant compliance management plan. [Extracted from the article]
