Abstract

This article examines the institutional independence of Ethiopia's transitional justice and national dialogue processes. It highlights the shortcomings of previous initiatives and the growing demand for a different approach. The Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission (ENDC) and the Transitional Justice Working Group of Experts (TJWGE) are evaluated, with concerns raised about their independence. The lack of awareness, transparency, and public trust in these institutions is identified as a challenge that must be addressed for the success of the processes. The article emphasizes the importance of independence in promoting accountability, transparency, trust, and reconciliation. It also discusses the risks of political interference and the need to overcome biases and influences in decision-making. The emergence of national dialogue and transitional justice in Ethiopia is seen as a response to historical grievances and the desire for reconciliation and a more just society. The article provides an overview of the establishment and progress of the ENDC and the TJWGE, as well as the challenges they face in terms of inclusivity and credibility. Overall, the article underscores the significance of independence in these processes and the necessity for concrete action and accountability to build public trust and achieve reconciliation.
