Abstract

A recent study conducted in Bari, Italy, explored the expression of ACE2 in the placenta and its potential role in the development of infantile hemangiomas (IH). The researchers collected placentae from patients with IH and control placentae, and performed immunohistochemical investigations. The study found that ACE2 expression was significantly lower in the placentae of mothers who delivered babies with IH compared to the control group. Additionally, the study group had lower placental weight and a higher occurrence of subclinical chorioamnionitis. This research suggests that alterations in placental ACE2 expression may contribute to reduced placental perfusion and the development of IH. [Extracted from the article]
