Abstract

A patent has been issued for a surgical tool holding and positioning device invented by Philip Cormier. The device is designed to assist surgeons during orthopedic arthroscopic surgery by providing a means of holding and manipulating surgical tools without the need for an assistant. The device includes a docking station for the surgical tool and an adjustable-friction ball and socket joint that allows for three degrees of rotational freedom. The joint applies a friction force to hold the tool in place, and a locking member can be used to further secure the tool in position. The device is intended to improve surgical efficiency and accuracy. The patent is assigned to Smith & Nephew Inc., a medical device company based in Memphis, Tennessee. [Extracted from the article]
