Abstract
- Indian government bonds eligible for index inclusion received a record $1.1 billion in overseas inflows last week, indicating that the central bank's restrictions on these securities have not deterred investor sentiment. Despite the Reserve Bank of India's efforts to limit access to new government bonds with longer tenors, foreign investors continue to prefer shorter-term bonds. The increase in India's weight on JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s emerging market index has also contributed to the inflows. Foreign ownership of these bonds has risen to 5.1% of the total outstanding.
