Abstract

A recent study conducted at Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine in Japan explored the removal of guttae, which are abnormal deposits on the cornea, in patients with Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD). The researchers investigated whether guttae could be removed through polishing without stripping the Descemet membrane and whether cultured corneal endothelial cell (CEC) transplant therapy could maintain reduced guttae. The study found that in some cases, guttae could be removed by scraping and polishing abnormal extracellular matrix (ECM) and degenerated CECs while preserving the Descemet membrane. Additionally, cultured CEC transplant therapy resulted in no increase in guttae for up to three years. This research provides insights into surgically eliminating guttae in FECD patients.
