Abstract

A recent qualitative study conducted by researchers at the University of Rennes in France explored the experiences and perceptions of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and nephrologists regarding kidney transplantation (KT). The study involved interviews with 99 CKD patients and 45 nephrologists, and six major themes were identified, including the burden of CKD on patients and their families, the healthcare professional-patient relationship, and the perception of dialysis as a restrictive treatment. The study found that patients' past experiences of CKD and KT, as well as their relationships with their families and nephrologists, significantly influenced their perceptions of KT. The researchers suggest that targeted policies addressing these factors may improve access to KT, and further research is needed to explore potential sex-based disparities.
