Abstract

A recent paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research suggests that time spent in foster care can actually help children. The research found that time in foster care reduces the likelihood of adult criminal involvement and conviction, particularly for violent crimes. Additionally, children in foster care had better academic outcomes, including improved attendance, math test scores, and higher likelihood of high school graduation and college enrollment. Other studies have also found positive long-term benefits of foster care, such as reduced likelihood of maltreatment. While foster care is not the ideal solution for every child, it can provide the necessary push for some parents to seek help and become better caregivers. [Extracted from the article]
