Abstract

A recent study conducted by the National Institute on Aging has found that poor oral health problems (POHP) may be associated with lower brain white matter integrity (WMI). The researchers screened over 5,000 participants and discovered that certain proteins in the plasma proteome, such as growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) and WAP four-disulfide core domain 2 (WFDC2), partially mediated the association between POHP and WMI. The study suggests that maintaining good oral health may have implications for brain health. Further research is needed to fully understand the relationship between oral health and brain function.
