Abstract

Children's Medical Center Corporation has been issued a patent for a mammalian somatic cell with modified RNA encoding reprogramming factors. The patent describes methods, compositions, and kits for changing the phenotype of a cell or cells without using exogenous DNA or viral vectors, which can have unintended mutagenic effects. The modified, synthetic RNAs described in the patent can be used to express desired proteins, alter cellular fates and developmental potential, and generate pluripotent or multipotent cells. The patent claims an isolated, mammalian somatic cell that has been reprogrammed using synthetic, modified RNA encoding specific factors. [Extracted from the article]
