Abstract

A recent study conducted at Tokyo Women's Medical University in Japan explored the viability of kidney transplantation as a treatment option for children and adolescents with severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID). The study found that out of 453 patients who underwent kidney transplantation between 1983 and 2023, six patients (1.3%) had SMID. Despite the need for careful perioperative management and continued medical care, the study showed favorable graft survival in these patients. The research suggests that kidney transplantation may be a viable option for children and adolescents with SMID. [Extracted from the article]
