Abstract
- This article provides an update on a longitudinal analysis of 401(k) plan participants, focusing on consistent participants who maintained accounts from 2016 to 2022. The findings show that the average and median account balances for consistent participants increased over the study period, with younger participants or those with smaller balances experiencing higher percentage growth. The study also found that consistent participants tend to concentrate their accounts in equity securities and there was an increase in the use of target date funds. Another document provides data on the accumulation of 401(k) plan account balances, showing that the consistent sample had higher average and median account balances compared to the broader database. Account balances tend to increase with age and tenure, and the average account balance among consistent participants more than doubled between 2016 and 2022. A third document discusses factors that influence changes in 401(k) plan account balances, such as contributions, investment returns, and withdrawal or loan activity. It also examines changes in asset allocation and reallocation activity among participants. The data suggests relatively small changes in participants' exposure to equities and an increase in the use of target date funds. The final document provides data and statistics related to participant tenure, average account balances, asset allocation by participant age, contributions, investment returns, benefits disbursed, and plan assets. The data covers the years 2000 to 2023 and includes information on employer contributions and market total return indexes. These sources are used in a research report that provides insights and analysis on retirement savings [Extracted from the article]
