Therapeutic potential of transient receptor potential (TRP) channels in psychiatric disorders.

Psychiatric disorders such as Bipolar disorder, Anxiety, Major depressive disorder, Schizophrenia, Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, as well as neurological disorders such as Migraine, are linked by the evidence of altered calcium homeostasis. The disturbance of intra-cellular calcium homeostasis disrupts the activity of numerous ion channels including transient receptor potential (TRP) channels. TRP channel families comprise non-selective calcium-permeable channels that have been implicated in variety of physiological processes in the brain, as well as in the pathogenesis of psychiatric disorders. Through a comprehensive review of current research and experimentation, this investigation elucidates the role of TRP channels in psychiatric disorders.
