There is a glaring lack of study on the vida or the saint's life rewritten as metrical romance despite the significant space it occupies in Philippine literary history. Its literary historical value is easily dismissed because of the impression that it merely served as instruments of colonial and religious propaganda, especially because it featured European characters and settings. Likewise, there is a perception that the koridong vida is inferior because of its prominent use of anachronisms and exaggerations. But the koridong vida is noteworthy as the only secular literature that retained popularity in different languages in the archipelago even after the Spanish and American colonizers fled. This popularity was possible through its circulation in both print and oral forms. Its development can also be traced from the places where the epic has disappeared, and to how it has developed into the realism of the Philippine novel. This paper analyzes Vida o Agui-Agui ni Santa Isideria na Aqui nin Magna Para-Asin, a Bikol korido from the archive of Museo Historico de Universidad de Santa Isabel in Camarines Sur, to offer an approach to the korido of the life of a saint as a literature borne out of the exchange of colonizer and native, print and oral, secular and religious-didactic. This paper focuses on lexical and grammatical formulae, versification, and the use of the central motif of the grotesque body, and how it structures the text as popular literature, sociohistorical artifact, and subject of academic study that opens a connection between the study of Philippine literature to medieval hagiographic tradition outside the country.
