Abstract

Microglia, specialized immune cells in the brain, play a crucial role in protecting against invaders, clearing debris, and maintaining neural connections. However, growing evidence suggests that malfunctioning microglia may contribute to conditions like Alzheimer's disease and depression. Researchers have found that targeting microglia and their interactions with synapses could lead to new therapies. While replacing microglia with rejuvenated cells or genetically engineering stem cells to have disease-fighting properties shows promise, there are still many obstacles to overcome before these treatments become a reality.
