Abstract
- Turtles have shells that are part of their skeleton and provide protection from predators. The shell determines the shape of the turtle's body, making them slow and awkward on land. Most turtle shells are covered in hard scales made of keratin, similar to fingernails. Turtles have a top shell called the carapace and an underside called the plastron. They have no teeth but have sharp jaws for eating various types of food. Turtles can live in both freshwater and saltwater environments and have adapted to their habitats. Sea turtles have been around since the time of dinosaurs and can swim at high speeds. Tortoises, on the other hand, are slow-moving and live on land. Sea turtles lay many eggs, but only a few hatchlings survive to adulthood. [Extracted from the article]
