Abstract
- This article discusses the devastating fire that occurred at Notre-Dame Cathedral in 2019 and the subsequent efforts to restore the iconic landmark. The fire destroyed the cathedral's roof frame, known as the charpente, which was a unique and intricate all-wood structure. French President Emmanuel Macron pledged to rebuild Notre-Dame within five years, and significant funds were donated for the restoration. The chief architect of France's national monuments, Philippe Villeneuve, and architect Rémi Fromont, who had previously studied the charpente, were involved in the restoration project. Traditional carpentry techniques, including the use of hand tools, were employed to recreate the charpente. The article highlights the cultural significance of Notre-Dame and the emotional impact of the fire on the French people. [Extracted from the article]
