Abstract

A multidisciplinary review conducted by the Inter-American Society of Cardiology and the Latin-American Heart Rhythm Society focused on the appropriate use of implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) in heart failure patients. The review examined the epidemiology of sudden cardiac death (SCD) and tools for identifying malignant ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) and performing risk stratification. The study found that ICDs are useful in both primary and secondary prevention of SCD in heart failure patients with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). However, the low rate of ICD implantation in many Latin American countries is still being researched. [Extracted from the article]
