Abstract

The U.S. ambassador to Tunisia, Joey Hood, and three experts from the Washington Institute discuss the evolution of great power competition in North Africa. The United States has maintained relationships with countries in North Africa for over 200 years, with a focus on improving livelihoods through economic cooperation. The U.S. has helped create jobs in Tunisia and has provided security assistance to combat terrorism. The U.S. relationship with Tunisia differs from that of Russia and China, as they do not engage with civil society or address long-term challenges. The experts also discuss the growing alliance between Russia and Gen. Khalifa Haftar in Libya, and the lack of economic integration in North Africa. They emphasize the need for the United States to counter Russian threats and promote its actions in the region. [Extracted from the article]
