Abstract

A recent study conducted by Shaoxing University in Zhejiang, China, has found that indole, a compound found in Chinese stinky tofu, has therapeutic potential in reducing intestinal inflammation and enhancing barrier function to mitigate alcoholic liver injury. The study used an ethanol gavage method to create an alcoholic liver disease (ALD) mouse model and found that feeding the mice stinky tofu with indole significantly reduced intestinal permeability, oxidative stress, and inflammation caused by alcohol consumption. The researchers concluded that indole has the potential to be used in the development of functional foods for treating ALD. [Extracted from the article]
