Abstract

A recent report from the Zvitambo Institute for Maternal and Child Health Research in Harare, Zimbabwe, highlights the challenges faced by children hospitalized for severe acute malnutrition (SAM). These children have a high risk of mortality, relapse, and rehospitalization after discharge. The current approaches to treatment do not adequately address the underlying social determinants of SAM or promote long-term health, growth, and neurodevelopment. The study evaluated a pilot intervention that aimed to provide child stimulation through play and strengthen caregiver capabilities through problem-solving skills, peer support, and income-generating activities. The intervention was found to be feasible, acceptable, and showed promise in modifying caregiver knowledge, attitudes, and practices. Further research is needed to evaluate the intervention's efficacy in improving child convalescence following complicated SAM. [Extracted from the article]
