Abstract
- A recent study conducted by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) explored the potential of using plasma Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA load, interleukin-6 (IL-6), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels as serological markers for early detection and prediction of treatment response in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). The researchers found a positive correlation between high plasma EBV DNA load and higher IL-6 and VEGF expression, which was closely associated with therapeutic response. The study suggests that persistent or recurrent plasma EBV load with higher IL-6 and VEGF levels could potentially predict disease progression and aid in selecting patients for additional therapy and longer follow-up.
