Abstract

The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) has launched a new type of bullion coin called single source mined gold coins. These coins are being exclusively sold by Costco Canada. The rising prices of gold and gold-backed cryptocurrencies have increased interest in these coins. The 2024 single-source Gold Maple Leaf coins are being sold at select Costco stores and on their website. The coins have a face value of $50 but were initially sold for $3,600 when the spot price of gold was around $2,600. Costco also sells other numismatic items such as silver American Eagles and Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coins. The gold coins are sourced from Agnico Eagle's Detour Lake mine in Northern Ontario. The coins feature King Charles III on the obverse and a sugar maple leaf on the reverse. They are protected by Bullion DNA technology to prevent counterfeiting. In Germany, a hoard of approximately 1,600 silver bracteate coins was discovered in Glottertal. These coins were minted in the 12th century and were commonly recalled and re-coined with different designs. Most of the coins in the hoard were minted around 1320 and originated from various cities in the region. [Extracted from the article]
