Abstract
- A recent study conducted at the University of Minnesota examined the evolution of organ donation from patients who received extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) for refractory out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). The study found that out of 419 ECPR patients, 116 survived neurologically intact, and 41 non-survivors consented to organ donation. This resulted in 74 organ transplants to 73 recipients, including kidneys, livers, lungs, and a heart. The researchers concluded that an established ECPR program can provide public health benefits beyond individual patient survival by serving as a source of transplant donors.
