Abstract
- The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) has developed the Practice Parameter for the Performance of Ultrasound of the Female Pelvis, which provides recommendations for high-quality ultrasound examinations in this specialty area. The document outlines indications for pelvic sonography, qualifications and responsibilities of personnel, preparation for the examination, and detailed specifications for evaluating the uterus, adnexae (ovaries and fallopian tubes), and cul-de-sac. It emphasizes the importance of accurate documentation, equipment specifications, quality assurance, safety, infection control, and adherence to the ALARA principle. The parameter was developed in collaboration with various organizations and committees, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach to advancing the safe and effective use of ultrasound in medicine.
