Abstract

A recent study conducted in central-southern Italy focused on Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) in children, revealing that patients typically experience early onset of symptoms such as recurrent fever, abdominal pain, and chest pain. The study found that the most common MEFV gene variant in Italian children with FMF was M694V/-, and patients were often treated with colchicine or biologic drugs like Canakinumab. The prevalence of FMF in the Abruzzo region was estimated to be at least 1:45,000, higher than expected, while lower rates were observed in Apulia and Sicily. Further epidemiological studies are needed to better understand the prevalence of FMF in Italy. [Extracted from the article]
