Abstract

Recent research from Kansai Electric Power Hospital in Osaka, Japan, has shed light on atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) triggered by pancreatitis in a patient with a genetic variant of membrane cofactor protein (MCP). The study found that a combination of genetic predisposition and pancreatitis led to the manifestation of aHUS, supporting the 'multiple hit theory' for the condition. Plasma exchange therapy and hemodialysis were effective in treating the patient's thrombocytopenia and anemia without progressing to end-stage kidney disease. [Extracted from the article]
