Abstract

The document discusses the comparison between the GOLD and STAR classifications for assessing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) severity and their association with all-cause mortality. The study applied the STAR classification to a population-based cohort study in Rotterdam, finding that STAR stages were significantly associated with mortality, especially in mild cases, compared to GOLD stages. The results suggest that STAR classification may have broader clinical applications, particularly in nonsmokers with COPD, and further research is needed to explore its utility in different populations and environmental exposures.
