Abstract

Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic have published new findings on the epidemiology, diagnosis, and management of cardiac amyloidosis, a condition characterized by the deposition of amyloid fibrils in the heart muscle. The study highlights the two primary subtypes of cardiac amyloidosis, transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR) and immunoglobulin light chain cardiac amyloidosis (AL), and discusses advances in diagnostics and treatment options. Noninvasive diagnostic tools such as electrocardiography, echocardiography, and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging are recommended for suspicion of cardiac amyloidosis, with bone scintigraphy confirming ATTR and histological confirmation required for AL. Treatment approaches vary depending on the subtype, from silencing transthyretin in ATTR to anti-plasma cell therapies in AL. [Extracted from the article]
