Abstract

Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania have found that propofol, a commonly used anesthetic, binds and inhibits the skeletal muscle Ryanodine Receptor 1 (RyR1) at clinically relevant concentrations. This interaction may partially mitigate malignant hyperthermia by inhibiting induced calcium flux through RyR1. The study, funded by NIH and the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research, provides insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the effects of propofol on RyR1.
