Abstract
- Recent studies from the University of California Davis focused on evaluating environmental risk factors associated with the survival of generic Escherichia coli in organic integrated crop-livestock systems in California and Minnesota. The research found that soil contamination by non-O157 STEC increased in 2022 compared to 2021, with concentrations of gEc in grazed soil returning to levels comparable to non-grazed or fallow treatments within 87-147 days post-graze. The study concluded that further investigation is needed to evaluate the adoption of specific rules between manure application by grazing and harvest to mitigate pathogen loads.
