Abstract

The article reports on the escalation of violence in Colombia's Catatumbo region, leading to at least 80 deaths and 32,000 displaced individuals. Venezuelan military jets were deployed to patrol the border as refugees, including impoverished farmers, fled into Venezuela. Colombian President Gustavo Petro suggested that Venezuela's involvement may have contributed to the strength of the National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrilla force. The ELN, heavily involved in the cocaine trade in Catatumbo, has been targeting civilians suspected of aiding rival factions, leading to a humanitarian crisis in the region.
