Abstract

This research report explores the impact of ethnicity on economic cooperation and development in Transylvania, Romania, and Southern Slovakia. Data indicate a negative correlation between ethnic diversity and economic progress due to the disadvantaged socio-economic status of the minorities. Alongside enduring structural factors stemming from historical discrimination, the "opportunity horizon" of minority Hungarians is influenced by language skills, government policies on minority issues, and kin-state support from Hungary. The research further suggests that neoliberal market deregulation intensifies ethnic parallelism, adversely affecting overall welfare. It calls for a resource-based approach to inter-ethnic relations and for a stronger emphasis on (micro)economic arguments in ethnopolitics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
