Abstract
- This paper centres on children's books in which the polyphonic technique of counterpoint has been successfully adopted. It is assumed by the author that the examples discussed in this essay show an intentional lack of coherence of the verbal and visual storylines, thus addressing the dual audience and opening the books up to multiple interpretations. The paper mentions intertextuality, which places Potter's and Janosch's work in children's literature tradition. Through a comparative study of Beatrix Potter's selected tales and two children's books by Janosch, the concept of a ‘book as game’ clearly emerges, in which the text and illustrations play equally essential roles.
