Abstract

This article presents an abstract of the research paper "Polymorphisms of Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase Gene and Thiol Compounds Levels in Patients With Alzheimer's Disease," which was discussed in the 13th Conference of the Polish Association of Neuropathologist. According to the paper, increased oxidative stress, DNA damage and triggering of apoptotic and excitotoxic cell death pathways are involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. Disturbance in the prooxidant/antioxidant balance increases during aging and the production of free radicals are alleged to play a significant role in the neurodegenerative process.
