Abstract

This article presents the author's views about the activities of the IEEE Communications Society. The author started his Presidential term in 2004 when the Society had just relocated its headquarters from 305 East 47th Street, New York City, to collocate with the IEEE Spectrum offices at 3 Park Avenue. The new space was significantly smaller and it resulted in a significant savings for the Society. That modest beginning was an auspicious prelude to many other positive accomplishments that followed. The Journal Citation Reports, published by Thomson Scientific-Institute of Scientific Information, listing for telecommunications ranks the seven publications as the top five, and numbers eight and fifteen. The fifth-ranked IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications first appeared in January 2002. In the same year, the Society also passed its IEEE Technical Activities Board five-year publications review. IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials has been added to the IEEE Electronic Library.
